Úlfrún's heart

I have probably not told everyone about this before. It's not that I spesificly tried not to, to me it just has never really seemed serious enough to worry about, and I didn't want people to worry unnessesarily.

But, Úlfrún was born with a hole in her heart. This is something that was never detected during my pregnancy, and many doctors and doctors-students have tried to listen to her heart and detect it knowing that it's there, but they can't.
When she went to the hospital for her first check-up, only five days old, a doctor detected a faint, high pitched sound in her heart. We met a heart-specialist, who confirmed that she was born with a hole in her heart. After an ultrasound-examination he told us that the hole was quite small and shaped irregularly, which made him hopeful that it would heal by itself. He also told us that even though it didn't heal, it would most likely have no effect on her life. He told us to come and see him again when she was 3 months old.
At the second check-up the heart-specialist told us that the hole was smaller and he convinced us that it would most likely heal completely before she reached the age of five. He told us to come back when Úlfrún was 1 year old.

Yesterday we went to see the heart-specialist again. He examined her heart and told me that the hole was the size of a needle-hole now, he joked and said that the red blood-cells almost have to line up to get through the hole. Now he doesn't want us to come back for inspection until she's 3 years old. He told me that the hole will have gone by then, and he probably won't be able to detect that it ever was there, when he sees her again.

I was very relieved, although I've never really worried about Úlfrún's heart, I've always believed that it would just heal quickly ... it dawned on me, when the doctor told me the good news, that Úlfrún was actually born with a flaw in her heart and that we are very lucky that it isn't more serious than it is!
